News I iCET Publishes the First China Auto Green Ranking
On April 28, 2011, iCET successfully held the “2011 China Auto Green Ranking Press Conference” in Beijing. The Auto Green Ranking is the first of its kind in China. Dinghuan Shi, Counselor of the State Council and Kejun Jiang, Director of Energy Research Institute (ERI), NDRC, gave the opening remarks. Over sixty media outlets attended the event, including CCTV, BTV, People Daily and Xinhua News Agency.
The event was held to honor iCET’s release of the first China Corporate Average Fuel Consumption (CAFC) ranking and the first China Environmentally Friendly Vehicle (EFV) ranking data reports. The CAFC ranking analyzed the average fuel consumption of China’s major auto groups, joint venture brand car makers and independent brand auto manufacturers. The CAFC data is based on the annual sales data and individual vehicle fuel consumption rates to calculate the sales-weighted average fuel consumption rate per vehicle, indicating the average fuel economy level of the whole corporate. The EFV ranking report is based on the LCA (life cycle assessment) methodology, using the data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) of China. Taking a lifecycle perspective, the methodology exams the production and use of vehicles, including exhaust emission standards, fuel type, fuel economy and curb weight as basic parameters for evaluation.
According to iCET’s analysis, in 2010, the average CAFC of China auto manufacturers is approximately 7.8 L per 100 km, declined by about 2.7% during the past 5 years in general. The average CAFC of joint venture brands is higher than that of China’s independent brands. iCET also presented the web and mobile application versions of the EFV online system to the audiences. The system will be applied as the EFV information inquiry platform for the public.
The two rating systems are designed to inform and empower consumers and policy makers to make wise decisions regarding the environmental performance of vehicles in China.
