News I iCET delivers Speech at the 1st Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Conference
June 17–19, 2013, the 1st Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Conference was successfully held at the newly established Shenzhen International Low-Carbon Town Convention & Exhibition Center. During the conference, Shenzhen officially launched its carbon emissions trading market. The forum was organized by the National Development and Reform Commission, China Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Xie Zhenhua, deputy director general of NDRC, and government officials, experts and scholars from the Netherlands, the United States, Sweden and the European Union attended the forum. Over a thousand experts and scholars exchanged their opinions on low-carbon technologies, low-carbon development concepts, low-carbon best practices and case studies. iCET’s President Dr. Feng An was invited to attend the forum and deliver a speech entitled “Strengthening the US-China Cooperation on Clean Energy and Clean Technologies”. He pointed out that China’s energy structure is still dominated by coal consumption, resulting in heavy PM2.5 and smog pollution. China urgently needs innovations to find best ways to develop and use a lot of clean energy and clean technologies. U.S. in many ways has a lot of matured technologies and commercial experience. China could learn from the American experience on clean energy and cleantech development and utilization, on optimizing energy use to reduce unit energy consumption, to create genuine smart low-carbon cities.
